Is Drug Abuse Part of the Script for Entertainers?
Sadly, many have a particular picture in mind when they think about people who struggle with addiction. They picture someone who is unsuccessful in their career, struggling in their personal life, or having financial issues. None of this could be further from the truth, as you’ll see illustrated below. Addiction does not care who you are, how successful you are, how much money you have. It’s a disease that can strike anyone at any time. Read on to learn about actors and actresses who have battled drug abuse.
Actors Who Have Struggled with Drug Abuse
Many of us remember the now-infamous drunken hamburger video starring David Hasselhoff, uploaded to YouTube by his daughter in an effort to show him that his drinking was out of control. Hasselhoff self-medicated his anxiety issues with drugs and alcohol. He didn’t seek help until his addiction was wildly out of control (costing him his marriage). Thankfully, he is clean and sober as of 2009.
Robert Downey Jr.
Downey Jr. has been open about his struggles with addiction. Early in his career, he struggled with cocaine and heroin abuse. It got to the point where he was experiencing blackouts and running naked on the street. After getting arrested for drug possession, Downey Jr. managed to turn his life around. When speaking about addiction, he states that one of the most important things to do is admitting that there is a problem.
Pitt’s struggles with addiction do not seem to be widespread public knowledge. Although, he has openly admitted that he struggled with heavy drug use in his early career. He states that he wanted to experience drug use and see the world. Instead, he ended up wasting a lot of time (and money). Pitt is clean and sober today.
Actresses Who Have Struggled With Addiction
Many people are unaware that the former queen of talk TV ever struggled with drug addiction. When Winfrey was starting her career, she was dating a crack cocaine addict, and she eventually became addicted to the drug. After leaving the relationship, she was able to stop using the drug, however, she fell into the same pattern in 1985 when she entered a new relationship with an addict. Today, she is clean and sober.
Spears’ incredibly public battle with addiction is memorable- from the umbrella incident to shaving her head, celebrity news channels had a field day with her addiction issues and mental breakdown. Today, Spears is back on track with her career and free of drug addiction, but it took years for her to get to that point.
Before Jolie became one of the most well-known actresses in the world, she struggled with cocaine and heroin addiction for years. Jolie now lives a sober lifestyle, and publicly states that she fell into a cycle of addiction during dark times, and managed to survive.
Clearly, drug and alcohol abuse can be overcome, but it is very, very rare to be able to do this without help. Addiction is tricky, and becoming addicted to a substance says nothing about who you are as a person, your morals, or your character- it is a disease that is treatable.
